Families should keep computers in the living room, family room or kitchen, never in a childs bedroom.
Never allow children to visit the internet without adult supervision.
Teach children never to give out personal information of any kind to anyone they and their parents dont already know in the real world except law enforcement officers. Personal information includes:
Full Name
Home Address
Home and Cellular telephone numbers
Date of Birth or age
Schools or churches they attend
Do not allow your children to send pictures of them to people that they do not know in real life.
No one should ever meet people face-to-face if they only know them online.
Parents should install software packages that block access to websites parents do not want children to see. Parents can also install software that monitors their childrens internet usage in general.
Children should also be told to call an adult when ever they see sexually explicit, violent or scary content.
It has also come to my attention that October has been designated as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. For more information you can go to www.us-cert.gov.
