Cell Phones and Other Driving Distractions

Cell phone use of any kind behind the wheel of any motorized vehicle is dangerous and can lead to deadly consequences. They can cause you to take your eyes off the road to dial the number leading to motor vehicle collision. Texting while driving is even worse. It requires you to take your eyes off the road and both hands off the wheel of any motorized vehicle, causing you to lose control of the vehicle. Do not do it.

Text messaging and sometimes any and all cell phone use behind the wheel of any motorized vehicle in motion are illegal in some states, counties and cities. Penalties for violating such laws vary from state to state, county to county and city to city. Check with your local law enforcement agency to determine what, if any, types of cell phone use is allowed in your area.

The only reason to use a cell phone behind the wheel is to call 911 in the case of an emergency. That said, even if you should have to call 911, look for the first available safe place to pull over and park in order to get off the road and clear of traffic. That way you can concentrate solely on the call to the 911 operator.

Things to keep in mind before driving anywhere:

Silence or turn off your cell phone before driving.

Set up a voice mail message explaining that you are on the road and you will return their call at your next convenient time.

NEVER TEST MESSAGE WHILE DRIVING!! Studies have shown that drivers who text message are 8 23 times more likely to be involved in motor vehicle collisions.

Find a safe place and pull off the road and park if your call is absolutely necessary.

Encourage family and friends to silence or turn off their cell phones before driving.

If you use common sense and consideration for others, you realize the only good option is to stay off the phone while driving. No phone call or text message is worth risking your life or anyone elses.

Other forms of distractions are reading newspapers, applying makeup just to name a couple.
