Evacuations

In case of an emergency it is always necessary to know how to conduct a safe and orderly evacuation of any building or home.  That goes for when one is at home, at work, at a house of worship, or any other location such as shopping malls etc.

A few reasons for emergency evacuations are:

   - Unknown source of Smell of smoke

   - Unknown source of visible smoke

   - Visible flames

   - CO2 detector/smoke alarm sounding

   - Unknown smell of chemicals

   - Chemical spill

   - Odor of Gas

   - Gas leak

At home, families should know how to practice EDITH.  It stands for Exit Drills In The Home.  Families should always know two ways out of rooms and the home itself.  They should practice crawling on the floor to the exits as if there is a real emergency.  Crawl until you are out of the house.  Families should also have a pre-arranged meeting place.  Once you are out of the house get to the meeting place.  Also once you are out, stay out!  You do not go back in for ANY THING or ANY REASON until you get an all clear from proper authorities!!!  Make sure that someone calls 911 and reports it.

In the work place, you should know how to conduct a safe and orderly evacuation in case of emergency.  First, check with your Human Resources office to find out what the companys policies and procedures are for what to do in case of fire or other emergencies.  Second, just like when you are at home, you should always know at least two ways out of a room or the building itself.  You should also know where all the fire alarms are and how to deploy them.  In an evacuation, you should never use the elevator; it should be left for the special needs and emergency personnel. Make sure that someone pulls a fire alarm and calls 911 and reports it.
