Fire Prevention Tips for Home

On average, almost 3,000 people die every single year from residential fires. This figure is very sobering, as these deaths could have been prevented by taking a few precautions around the house. If you are vigilant, then hopefully you will not have to worry about having a fire in your home.

When you are cooking in the kitchen, always stay there. Never leave anything cooking on an open flame. This precaution should also be taken when cooking on an outdoor grill. Always keep things that can burn easily, like curtains and dish towels, away from flames. The storage place for matches and lighters, used either in the kitchen or with your grill, should be a locked drawer or cabinet. A fire extinguisher should be kept close by in the kitchen and in the garage. Smoke detectors are a good idea, especially in the bedroom. If you have smoke detectors in your home, please remember to test them at least once a month to see if the battery needs to be replace.

If you have a fireplace or wood burning stove, make sure that all pipes and chimneys are clean and ready for use before using them. You should have them inspected by a professional at least once a year, especially right before cold weather starts. A screen for the fireplace is a good idea to keep sparks or falling logs from rolling out. Dont leave candles burning in any room of the house. Always blow them out before leaving the room.

It is always a good idea to have a fire escape plan for you and your family. Explain to your children that the plan is just in case a fire happens in the home. This plan is for their safety. If you practice it together, you will ensure that you can all get out of the house safely just in case there ever is a fire.
