Social Services

There are several charities such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army that are committed to provide social work for those in need. Local churches have drives to gather food and clothing to be distributed to needy families. Homeless shelters provide much needed services, especially in today's economy. Some are open 24 hours a day and are usually open to anyone. Most expect clients to stay elsewhere during the day, and encourage them to look for work during this time. Some of the shelters help with job training and job placement.

The client can take a shower and in most shelters, get clean clothes.
Some of the shelters provide a soup kitchen. Most shelters do not provide for drug and alcohol abuse, and these clients are referred to agencies that can help these people. All shelters depend on donations, as does the Red Cross and Salvation Army. However, the churches collect and distribute the items to the needy by donation from parishioner.

There are many other ways that social services can help people. Seniors need a lot of help, which is why many volunteers provide transportation to and from doctors, pick up their medications, and help by getting groceries. Meals on Wheels, a volunteer group, deliver meals to those who are unable to get around. Just having someone stop by and chat a while is a wonderful supportive service for seniors that is made available through social services.
