Chicago has many historic police stations. One of them is the 22nd District station, which was used in the backdrops of the TV series Hill Street Blues and a movie named Primal Fear. It was closed in 1961 and merged with a station at Monroe and Racine. It was used until 1997 by the Chicago Police Department, at which time it was closed for remodeling. It then became the Chicago Police Department headquarters, and it is still used for that purpose. The Halsted Station in Lincoln Park dates back to 1888. It was used by the 40th Precinct. In 1930, it became an American Legion Hall and it is the oldest former police station in Chicago. These are just a couple of the historic Chicago police stations that were active during the heyday of bootlegging and organized crime in the city.
Issaquah, Washington's police station was remodeled in 2008. The planning committee wanted it remodeled to include Memorial Park to be used as a place for the public to gather. The design is very different from the historic building- it is not dreary, but instead presents a welcoming look to the community. It has a Northwest design that reflects the preservation of the environment.
In central Pennsylvania, stations in Berks County and Lycoming County have buildings that go back to the days of the Eisenhower Administration. They are often cramped, with outdated accommodations and equipment. Some of these stations have been renovated by Hammel Associates, an architectural firm for whom police station renovations now make up one-third of their business. The firm says the renovations have brought the police from the basement to the light of day.
