Help Prevent Home Fires

Fire prevention in the home begins with education. Everyone in the house needs to know how to prevent fires and what to do in case of a fire. Install smoke detectors in your home, if you do not already have them. They need to be close to all bedrooms and on each floor of the house. After you have installed the smoke detectors, be sure to check them every month and change the batteries when needed.

You need to be very careful when burning candles, especially if there are small children in the home. Never leave a candle burning in a room with unattended children. Also, when you light a candle, make sure that you put the matches or lighter out of the reach of your children. Be sure your candles are in a proper holder and do not put them too close to anything which might catch fire.

In the kitchen, there are many things you can do to help prevent fires. First off, wear the right clothes when you are cooking. Long, loose sleeves are not very safe, so roll them up or find some way to keep them above the elbow. When you are using a dishtowel, do not lay it on the stove. If you do happen to have a grease fire, never put water on it. Instead, you need to cover the pan with a lid and turn off the stove.

Don't take chances with frayed electrical cords, as they can easily catch fire. Have them replaced as soon as you possibly can. Don't overload your circuit by plugging in too many appliances into the same outlet. This can cause a fire as well.
