Corrections Officers And The Dangers They Face

Corrections officers face serious and violent prisoners on a daily basis. They have essential but hazardous jobs whether they are working in a reformatory, penitentiary, or county jail. When a corrections officer is working in a facility where the population remains static, he/she can develop a mental profile of each inmate and learn how to communicate with that individual. Although prisoners might be civil, the officers know that they could be on the receiving end of verbal and physical attacks.

The corrections officers who work directly with inmates are not armed. They must depend on quick wits and strength to verbally diffuse or physically restrain prisoners. COs are often faced with gassing which is when an inmate or prisoner throws a mixture of feces and urine in the officer's face. Spitting is common. Many COs are forced to protect themselves with spit shields. Both officers and their families are in danger of contracting HIV, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis and other contagious and, sometimes deadly diseases. Officers are in danger of physical harm from prison-made weapons. When transporting/escorting a prisoner who is high or coming off drugs, great care must be taken. Often, multiple officers are required to ensure the safety of all.

When conducting body or cell searches, correction officers are in danger of being pricked, jabbed or cut by a germ-laden piece of contraband. When dealing with the mentally ill, correction officers must be ready at any time of defend themselves. In maximum security facilities, officers often monitor prisoners or inmates from consoles via cameras set up throughout the building. There is still close contact with inmates. COs must handle taunts and verbal harassment dished out daily as well as any physical assaults. The job of a corrections officer is dangerous indeed.

Whoa this is very serious work here, I was wondering if every person must serve as a corrections officer at one point? Because I am going into the police work.
