EMS and Their Vital Role

Fire fighters are the backbone of our EMS operators. Every day, all across America, firefighters are out fighting to save lives. Firefighters are the EMS in most cities. They are trained intensively on life saving techniques. Not only are they trained to save lives, they have to be trained to keep themselves safe. Fire fighters and paramedics work in very dangerous conditions, so they must learn safety so they don't become injured, or worse killed.

Most of the calls that firefighters respond to are EMS calls. EMS personnel must be in good physical shape in order to withstand the stresses of their jobs. When there are car crashes on the highways, the EMS are the first to respond. They put themselves in harm's way just being out their to give their services. There is always the danger of getting into a crash on the way to the accident site, plus there is the danger of getting hit while working on victims.

EMS personnel also respond to 911 calls for cardiac arrest more than any other type of emergency service. It is imperative to get to the victim as fast as possible. Time wasted is lives lost. With cuts in budgets and money for emergency personnel, this continues to be a growing problem.

Communities must continue to support their local firefighters to keep the EMS out there. Local communities continue to try and convince their local and state representatives how important the EMS's role in each community is. They have to be able to justify more funds to run the local departments with EMS personnel.
