Social Services Touch Lives at Every Stage

The agencies that compose social services in America aid in keeping the nation healthy and safe in a variety of ways. Social services are thought to be only for families in need, but in actuality, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has a diverse range of abilities.

These agencies include the Administration of Children and Families, the Administration on Aging, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Food and Drug Administration, the Indian Health Service, the National Institute of Health, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. These 11 federal agencies ultimately report to the Office of the Secretary.

All departments of the social services have dual functions. Firstly, they function in their respective fields of expertise to improve the lives of all Americans. Secondly, they work together to identify trends and disseminate information for the good of all. The broad range of services available through the United States Department of Health and Human Services include everything from the foster care system, and adoption to regulating medical clinic procedures and coordinating transplant donations.

Human Service organizations can help with insurance and energy costs. Discovery and research in medical, behavior and environmental issues are also among the responsibilities of the Department of Health and Human Services. Maintaining the social, economical and health status of Native Americans is an important task of this organization. Maintaining emergency preparedness and ensuring the safety of food and prescription drug industries as well as monitoring potentially dangerous environmental toxins and their effects also falls under the responsibilities of Human Services.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services exists for the benefit of all Americans and, to an extent, the global community by providing a comprehensive source of information and aid.
