Being a Corrections Officer

Being a corrections officer is a difficult and dangerous job, especially for female corrections officers in male prisons. Because correctional officers work around hardened criminals every minute of every day, they are exposed to many dangers. Corrections officers are police officers, social workers, counselors, and therapists all rolled into one. They need their police training to enforce the rules and laws of the prison.

Because the population of prisons are so dangerous, it is very important to take special safety precautions against injury and death. Hardened criminals are always thinking of a way to beat the system, so it is important for corrections officers to always be on their toes. Due to the violence level in our nation's prisons, corrections officers go through specialized training to be able to deal with any dangerous situations that may arise.

Prisons are a unique environment with special needs. The corrections officers are backed up by SORT teams, SWAT Teams, Bomb Squads, and other specialized teams. Having the backup of these specialized teams makes the job a bit easier and safer for corrections officers. Most corrections officers go through continued training on a regular basis to help combat new problems as they arise. They take every measure they possibly can to ensure the safety of their prisons, their prisoners, themselves, and the people outside of the prison. Though a corrections officer's job is very dangerous, they have great compensation and benefits packages. They also have the type of courage that many people look up to.
