Resources for Rape Victims

Rape, also known as sexual assault, is something no one chooses to have happen to them. Emotions felt by victims of sexual assault are varied and many. Perhaps the most important thing a rape victim should know is they can get ongoing, invaluable assistance.

The most important thing to do should one find themselves the victim of an assault is to report it. Your local law enforcement agencies can help. In most states, hospitals are considered to be safe havens for victims of assault. Often a sexual assault advocate, a person specially trained and certified to provide support, will be assigned to the victim. The advocate provides an avenue to obtaining emotional and legal support for a victim.

The good news is you can be a rape survivor. Life does go on after an assault. It takes time and emotional strength to deal with such a trauma in your life. Working with a trained counselor is advised. If youve used the services of a sexual assault advocate, ask this person for a counseling referral. It is important that you feel comfortable with and are able to develop a sense of trust with your counselor. Some of these services may be free. Continue your counseling relationship until you feel ready to cut the ties. If you find you still need support, dont hesitate to resume counseling.

Know that indeed your life was changed as a result of an assault, but also be aware that in the process, you, too, have become a stronger person. You can now get back to living life your way. Some victims go on to become trained sexual assault advocates. Strength is power!
