Fire alarm levers are in a lot of buildings are for emergencies only. They are in a lot of government buildings, public buildings, apartment buildings, and schools, house of worship, restaurants, bars, lodges, and businesses. Never pull them in fun as a joke or prank. When you do pull a fire alarm as a joke, and the fire engine has to responds to the scene to shut it off. This takes valuable time that could be spent on a real and legitimate emergency.
Pulling a fire alarm intentionally when there is no fire or odor of smoke or gas is illegal in many areas. If you are caught doing it, you may face fines and/or jail time. Penalties for violating such laws or ordinances vary from state to state or county to county.
Fire alarm levers should only be pulled in a real emergency. Such emergencies include fire, odor or sight of smoke, or odor of gas. Once a fire alarm is pulled get out of the building immediately and stay out until the fire department says it is okay to return.
