Snow Shoveling

During the winter we see a lot of snow, sleet and freezing rain.  Therefore snow shoveling is often a necessary winter weather chore.  Here are some general tips to make the job much safer:

Drive plenty of fluids before, during and after shoveling.

Wear warm clothing that doesnt hinder your ability to move as freely and easily as possible.

Take frequent breaks at 15 30 minute intervals.

Try to shovel in small easily manageable amounts.

Try to lift with your legs, not your back.

If you have a heart disease or a history of any other cardiovascular disease, check with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to do it.  If not, try to have a relative, friend or neighbor do it, if possible.

Keep a cell phone with you at all time to call for help in the case of an emergency.

Make sure some one else knows you are outside shoveling.
