Fire Prevention in the Home

When cooking, it is always important to remember to stay near the stove and never leave it unattended. You should also keep things that can catch fire such as hand towels, paper or plastic bags, and curtains at least 3 feet from the stove top and burners. You should also roll up your sleeves when cooking and wear oven mitts. Loose fitting clothing can easily catch fire just by touching a hot burner. When cooking outside on the grill, it is equally important that you not leave the grill unattended. The grill should also be kept at least 10 feet away from any objects, including the house, any bushes or shrubs, and away from any low lying tree branches.

Space heaters are another area of concern when it comes to fire prevention in the home. Space heaters should be kept at least 3 feet away from any objects such as walls, curtains, and stacks of newspapers. The chimney is another area to watch for. Chimneys should be inspected annually by a certified inspector, and they should be cleaned whenever it is needed. You may also want to keep a glass or metal screen in front of the opening at all times, to help keeps things from going into the chimney as well to keep things from floating or flying out.

Another area to be watchful with is candles in the home. A candle should never be left unattended, and they shouldn't be left lit overnight. All lit candles should also be kept high out of the reach of any children that may be in the home at the time. You may also want to regularly have your smoke detectors checked and their batteries replaced.
