Victims Of Violence

Survivors of violence of any type have shattered pieces in their lives and will be left with a silent wound. These problems of the victims become a problem for hospitals, prisons, schools and even businesses. Intense fear, helplessness or sheer horror are some of the responses of the victims. Flashbacks, mood swings, guilt, distrust, withdrawal, nightmares and grief are just some of the experiences that will affect these victims. Homelessness, prostitution, delinquency and criminal activities are some of the activities these victims will turn to. If these problems are not handled with the proper treatments, a victim can develop chronic medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer, lung and liver disease and much more.

There are many resources for these victims of violence. These interventions will acknowledge the victim's need for respect, to be informed, included, connected, safe and to be hopeful of their recovery. One can find numerous sites for help on the internet. These programs are designed for all types of victims such as: child abuse, sexual abuse, elderly abuse, exploited children, accident victims and victims of violent storms and terrorism. All one has to do is find what they need and most of these programs have 800 numbers.

A nonprofit information, research and networking resource is the Victim Assistant Online which has 3000 links to organizations, agencies and services around the world. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24 /7. Their assistance is available in English and Spanish but they have interpreters available for 170 other languages. RAINN has two hotlines and a website for victims of sexual assault and their family and friends. Other services are: NOVA, Childhelp, Elder Abuse Hotlines, MADD, US Department of Justice: Violence Against Women, plus each state has their own. Some of these are Safe houses and Centers for Crime Victims.
