There are many historic police stations in America. Many of the oldest police stations in are still standing, but are no longer used by the police. But they are used for many other purposes. Some are converted into places of business, while others become historical museums.
The historical police station with the most recognition is based in Chicago and was built in 1888. It housed the 22nd District police. This building is famous for its appearances in several television shows and movies. It was seen during the opening credits of Hill Street Blues, a television show that aired throughout the 1980s.
New York is home to many historical police stations. The 83rd Precinct Station of New York City was built in 1895 by William B. Tubby. It housed the police force and a stable for police horses. It has been a part of the National Register of Historic Places as of 1982. The 86th Precinct Station of Brooklyn was built in 1892 by architect Emile Gruwe. At the time of construction, to the west of the building was the morgue, which was once part of the police operations. The building was abandoned by the police in 1970 and is now in decay and in danger of extinction.
There are many police stations in America that could be considered historical landmarks. Some are officially designated and there are many others that are awaiting their moment to be placed in history as a monument for posterity.
